a. They believed that everyone was absolutely pure and that each individual is a part of God.
b. They believed that people's thoughts and intuition were the voice of God.
c. They did not believe in institutions like government because they thought the individual human mind was the strongest power in the universe.
I feel that I'm closer to a Dark Romantics than a Transcendentalists because its true that people can be evil, insane, and impure because GOD doesn't see everybody being perfect.
Basically, I thought that the story was good but it was too long. It would've still been a good story if he would've took out the 8th paragraph and continued in full detail.
One thing that he did in the story that really caught my eye is that, he felt aloft of anger with his first cat and then he more anger when brought the second cat home. Another part in the story that caught my eye is when he came home one night, his cat inflicted a wound on his hand with its claws and teeth. Then, he said that he possessed him. He said that he then grabbed the animal by the throat and cut out its eye with a pen-knife.
I took from my waistcoat-pocket a pen-knife, opened it, grasped the poor beast by the throat, and deliberately cut one of its eyes from the socket!
It shows that if the Transcendentalists were in this situation, they would've still believed that GOD would've controlling the man and he would've not committed the crimes that he committed and it would still be true that people can be evil, insane, and impure because no body's perfect.
"The fury of a demon instantly possessed me." This quote shows that demons can possess people and that Poe is arguing on the Dark Romantics side.
The Raven
One midnight while he was nodding and napping, he heard someone tapping at his chamber door. It was a December and ghosts were walking the floor. He heard the curtains making rustling noises and he felt terrors that he never felt before and he felt his heart beating kind of fast. Eventually, his soul grew stronger and then he apologized to the man or woman and explained to them that he was napping. He stood in the darkness wondering, fearing, doubting , and dreaming dreams that he never dreamed before. He turned back to the chamber door and the tapping he heard before grew louder. When he opened his chamber door, a raven flew in and landed above his chamber door. After while he the raven what its name was and the raven responded saying nevermore. Then, he started having thoughts that no living being was yet blessed of seeing a bird or beast above his chamber door with such name as "Nevermore." The raven still sat lonely on the placid burst.
A symbol is something that stands for a much larger idea.
"Prophet!" said I, "thing of evil!--prophet still, if bird or devil! By that Heaven that bends above us--by that God we both adore.
Section 2 Realism:
Basically they are lots of parts of realism in this story but the main part is, in the beginning of this story its talks about this girl or woman is crying while in her sister's arms. She sat back with her head thrown back on the cushion of the chair being quite motionless.
She sat with her head thrown back upon the cushion of the chair, quite motionless, except when a sob came up into her throat and shook her, as a child who has cried itself to sleep continues to sob in its dreams. The problem that she wanted to solved is, the realists didn't want people to use their imaginations and picture things that were real.
Frederick Douglass wrote this story to show the things that he went through while he was staying with his master or slave owner. The things that his master did to him, well you can say that he got tired of going those things and he wanted to live a normal life like everybody else.
One example that I can use for realism is the song " Treat Her Like a Lady" by Joe ("Tell me when was the last time, you brought her roses home from work, Now see what's old to you, is just like new to the next man. What you don't do for her, she'll find somebody else who can")because it is basically saying that if you don't treat your woman like she needs to be treated, then somebody else will treat her better than you did or can.
Basically when I was, I got into a lot of trouble. I didn't live like a normal kid was supposed to live because we were going through a lot of problems that involved money. I learned the streets at a young age and yes I was involved in the drug business, so that's how I made my money. In the streets, it was rough and the nights were lonely and cold. Some people thought I was crazy but it didn't care because I was happy that my family was taken care of. A lot of people thought that I was gonna die in the streets but I had been out there to long to stop and let my family keep going through problems.I finally settled down and started living right when I turned 14 and I been living right ever since.
Some people didn't picture to be a bad kid who did things when I was little but they were to go back in time with me then they wouldn't think that I was crazy and they would see the things that I went through to survive and this is why my story is an example of realism.
I show evidence by writing my own short story and I provided information to support my story and it was very fun to complete this assignment.

Unit Two Romanticism and Transcentdentalism/ Lit-Comp 11-Howard Gartrell
http://www.ibiblio.org/ebooks/Irving/Winkle/Irving_Winkle.pdf
Section 1: The Romantics
Theme- a topic or subject, as of a lecture, sermon, essay, etc.
Yes I would know what one look like if I saw it.
Yes I can provide evidence to support what I say.
These stories are some of the best examples of Americans Romanticism, a style of writing that required people to use their imaginations.
Romantics, on the other hand told stories of ordinary people, like Rip Van Winkle or Natty Bumppo who were unsophisticated and were able to rise to the level of hero. "Rip Van Winkle, however, was one of those happy mortals, of the foolish, well- oiled disposition, who take the world easy, eat white bread or brown, whichever can be got with least thought or trouble, and would rather starve on a penny than work for a pound. "
Romantics also focused on nature in their writing since they thought it was away to escape from the loud city, as well as a way to hear ones intuition.
But it would have been worth any statesman's money to have heard the profound discussions that sometimes took place when by chance an old newspaper fell into their hands from some passing traveler.
-The following Tale was found among the papers of the late Diedrick Knickerbocker, an old gentleman of New York, who was very curious in Dutch history of the province, and the manners of the descendants from its primitive settlers.
-From even this stronghold the unlucky Rip was at length routed by his termagant wife, who would suddenly break in upon the tranquility of the assemblage.
*It shows that Rip is lazy and don't want to work. Basically like the story says that Rip would rather starve than work for a pound.
*It means people were having conversations that others thought ere loud conversations and that what made the city loud.
American Romanticism
Thanatopsis
*Focus on Imagination
*Celebration of Nature
*Promotion Common People
thanos-death and topsis- seeing
Part1: appreciating nature and imagining it was a woman- mother Nature.
Part2: when each person dies, he just becomes part of the earth.
Part3: " Thou shalt die down With Patriarchs of the infant world"
Part4: imagination- " All that tread the tribes That slumber in its bosom."
The poem, Thanatopsis, shows the themes of Romanticism.
William Cullen Bryant wrote the poem make people at ease with death through the comforting beauty of nature. One has to use his/her imagination when thinking about talking to Mother Nature as well as when imagining all the people who have died and who buried in "earth's bosom." The whole poem is a Celebration of Nature. In death all people from kings to peasants are equal.
I showed evidence in this section by breaking down my parts of the poem, Thanatopsis, and writing them down in sentences.
Section: 2 The Transcendentalists
One might think the atmosphere was made transparent with this design, to give man, in heavenly bodies, the perpetual presence of the sublime.
To speak truly, few adults persons can see nature. In the presence of nature, a wild delight runs through the man, in spite of real sorrows.
Basically I like how it talks about the parts of nature. It also talks about the different ways people saw nature. I like this line he said in the story:" The lover of nature is he whose inward and outward senses are still truly adjusted to each other."
First it starts talking about the power of new nature and the reestablishment of harmony. One line that I like in this story is:" A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best."
Transcendentalists believed that GOD spoke through people's minds and their hard work. transcendentalists did not believe that institutions like the government or organized religion were effective.

Basically GOD was speaking through this man's mind when he was building the cabin. It showed how he started out and the things he was doing before he started building the cabin and it also showed the supplies and tools he used to build the cabin. He later packed up some of his supplies and things and then paddled downstream to his new home.

Unit One-Native Americans of Colonial Periods/ Lit-Comp 11- Howard Gartrell
http://www.firstpeople.us/html/An-Aztec-Prayer.html
http://www.firstpeople.us/html/Indian_Prayer.html
Well the Aztec Prayer is one of the poems that I read and basically talks about GOD giving his riches to people so they can enjoy what he gives them. Another poem would be the Indian Prayer, it compares mother to earth and father to sky. My opinion about it is, they're saying we born on earth our mother and made from GOD our father.
evidence from Aztec Prayer-
Lord most giving and resourceful.
evidence from Indian Prayer-
Oh our Mother the earth, Oh our Father the sky, Your children are we, and with tired backs, We bring you the gifts you love.
Well the Aztecs say that GOD gives to you and the Indians that you give back to GOD but more than what he gives to you. The Aztecs believe that people should enjoy the goods and riches that GOD naturally gives and the Indians believe that you gives back GOD, he will then weave for us a garment of brightness which is a long white robe.
It the best known of Edwards Sermons.
They say people got so sacred they fainted when they heard it.
GOD is under manner of obligation to keep him a moment from eternal destruction. So that thus it is, that natural men are held in the hand of GOD over the pit of hell. They have deserved the fiery pit and already sentenced to it and GOD dreadly provoked his anger is as great towards them as to those that are actually suffering the executions of the fierceness of his in hell.
Puritan- a member of a group of English Protestants.
Rationalism- the principle or practice of accepting reason as the only authority.
Original Sin- the sin of disobedience committed by Adam and Eve.
Deism- a body of ideas that did not revolve around a church itself.
Rationalist Men and Women also believed that human society was run by natural law.
Puritans believed in authority and the bible and puritans is broken down in doctrine, scriptures.
A Rationalist would believe that anything could be understood through science.
Puritans thought this to be an insult to GOD since they believe humans had no business deconstructing God's work.
Temperance first, as it tends to procure that coolness and clearness of head, which is so necessary where constant vigilance was to be kept up, and guard maintained against the unremitting attraction of ancient habits, and the force of perpetual temptations.
Conceiving then, that, agreeably to advice of Pythagoras in his Golden Verses, daily examination would be necessary.
Temperance, for example, was by some confined to eating and drinking, while by others it was extended to mean the moderating every other pleasure, appetite, inclination, or passion, bodily or mental, even to our avarice and ambition.
The difference between the Puritans and the Rationalists is : The Rationalists believed in doing things through science and the Puritans prayed and asked GOD to do things for them.
"I determined to give a week's strict attention to each of the virtues successively."
He decided to create and write the thirteen virtues to help stop him eating and drinking so much.
